British Quality Wild Venison certification gives wild venison producers and processors a recognised, independently assessed mark of quality. It shows buyers that wild deer are managed responsibly and that carcasses are handled safely and traced from field to facility. As demand for assured British wild venison grows, that credibility helps businesses build customer confidence, open doors to catering, wholesale and public sector buyers, and stand out in a busy market.

From 5 October 2026, getting certified becomes even easier. BQWV has been working with our certification provider, Supply Chain In-sites, to develop a new approach to certification using the SCI Verification app.

Using technology to prove location, date and visual quality, replaces the need for an in person auditor visit. Producers simply use the app to share photos and records from the work they already do as part of their normal working day. The app is a tool for demonstrating your best practice and the SCI certification team then reviews this against the BQWV Standard before making the certification decision. The result is a more practical, flexible route to certification with a clear record already in place when it is time to renew.

What the app means for BQWV producers

The app lets you show the high standards you operate to everyday, rather than arranging your certification around a single annual audit.

Producers can:

  • Capture evidence as they work, rather than preparing everything for a single audit date.
  • Be guided through the BQWV standard, so it is always clear what to include.
  • Keep everything in one place, with records, photographs, and supporting evidence all brought together.
  • Submit information even without mobile signal, uploads happen when connectivity returns.
  • Get help when needed, with SCI support available through the app’s chat function.
  • Renew with ease, as the information already in the app is ready to support your renewal, so you are not starting from scratch.

Producers continue to be assessed against exactly the same BQWV Standard, the app simply gives you an easier way to show it.

“The important change here isn’t simply replacing a physical audit with a digital one. The app allows producers to demonstrate what they are doing as they do it. Instead of certification being based largely on a snapshot taken on one day, we can build an ongoing body of evidence that the BQWV requirements are being followed in practice. We think that makes assurance both more useful and easier for producers to work with.”

Tried and tested by producers

The app has been trialled by producers ahead of launch, and the feedback so far has been encouraging.

Processors and larders

An SCI auditor will continue to assess processors on site, providing a hands-on review of facilities, systems, and documentation. The audit for processors is otherwise unchanged.

Getting started

Before you begin, we recommend downloading the BQWV Producer Handbook and pre-application checklist to make sure your records and documentation are in order. You can then apply online through Supply Chain In-Sites.

Frequently asked questions

When does the app launch?
The SCI Verification app launches on 5 October 2026.

Who will use the app?
The app is for producers, including stalkers, estates, and larders. Processors will still receive an on-site assessment from an SCI auditor.

How much does Producer certification cost?

With the launch of the new SCI Verification app, we’ve been able to make BQWV certification even more affordable. It now costs just £67 + VAT.

What do I need to use the app?
A smartphone with a camera.

Will SCI be checking up on me day to day?

No, the app is simply a way for you to share photos and records from your normal work. The SCI certification team will periodically review your submissions and may ask for further evidence if required. You will be notified via the app and email.

Is app-based certification as robust as a site visit?
Yes. Producers are assessed against the same BQWV Standard. The difference is that evidence can be collected over time as activities take place, giving the certification team evidence of how the requirements are being followed in practice rather than relying on only a single point-in-time visit.

I’m already BQWV certified. What happens at renewal?
Your current certificate remains valid until its expiry date. Supply Chain In-Sites will contact you six weeks beforehand with your renewal details, and you can complete your renewal using the evidence collected through the app.

What if I need help using the app?
Supply Chain In-Sites can help with any questions about the app or the audit process. The Producer Handbook is also a useful guide to what you’ll need. Contact Sophie Honey at Supply Chain In-Sites if you have any questions: sophie.honey@scinsites.com. Once you start using the app, you can use the in-app chat to reach SCI support.
